What woman wouldn’t want to start her own business these days?
It sounds great. Be your own boss. Make a ton of money. Get on “Shark Tank.” Sell your business to Facebook or Google or something. Oh wait, that’s just what could happen if you’re incredibly successful. And being successful is hard.Especially when the failure rate for new businesses is so damn high.
And while it’s sadbut true, being a woman makes getting a new business off the ground even harder. But I’m sure that doesn’t surprise you.
No matter what a struggle it is, women can literally put themselves in a location where they’re more likely to find success asentrepreneurs. There’s truth in putting yourself in the right place to increase the amount of opportunities available for your business to grow. I’m talking networking, conferences, workshops, classes and stuff like that.
According to this report, there are actually specific cities that are best for women tolive in when starting a business.
They are: New York, San Fransisco Bay Area, London, Stockholm, Singapore, Toronto, Washington DC, Sydney, Paris and Seattle.
This makes me so much happier that I already live in one of these awesome cities.
Cities were judgedin five areas: market, capital, talent, culture and technology. They were then split into two groups, operating environment, which basically means access to markets, and enabling environment, which pretty much means access to capital. Getting investors is harder for women.
Looking a little deeper, another interesting statistic from the report is that only 2percent of women entrepreneurs have broken the $1 million mark. Two percent?! Apparently, men are 3.5 times more likely to make bank (at least $1 million) than women. Come on, ladies. We can do better than that, right?
Obviously, if you don’t live in these cities, that doesn’t mean you have to give up or pause an entrepreneurial endeavor. Living in these places justgives women more access to the necessary resources, compared to living in the middle of nowhere. And there are ways to start your own business online no matter where you live.
As long as you have the right tools, the right mindset, work ethic and little bit of luck, you can make it happen. Hey, you might even make it on “Shark Tank” and end up selling your company to Google.
